Abstract

Sertoli cells play an important role in the physical and metabolic support of germ cells developing in the seminiferous tubules within the testis. They are also closely involved in the initiation and control of spermatogenesis (Gray and Beamand, 1984). Many functions of Sertoli cells have been maintained in vitro as the production of androgen binding protein (ABP) and the binding to follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). One role of the Sertoli cells is the production of lactate and pyruvate as substrates for the germ cells. The energy requirements of isolated germ cells are not fully supported by glucose but they are able to utilize the lactate and pyruvate produced by the Sertoli cells. Different compounds have been show to produce testicular damage in experimental animals. Some of these drugs have specific target cells within the testis, including the Sertoli cells.
