Abstract

This paper presents the results of a Monte Carlo simulation study of the effects of randomly distributed quenched impurities on prewetting and wetting transitions in adsorbed layers. We concentrate on simple model systems with only two types of adsorption sites and investigate how the concentration of impurities affects wettability of a surface. It is demonstrated that the impurities may change the character of the prewetting transition and considerably change the wetting temperature. In particular, it is shown that even very weak heterogeneity destroys the first-order character of the prewetting transition and may induce or exclude wetting of a solid substrate.
