Abstract

Instrumental conditioning procedures were used to establish cooperative relations in 30 pairs of 10-year old Negro males. Following acquisition, 15 pairs were punished in the following manner: one S in each pair received punishment for cooperative responding, while the second S continued to receive reinforcement for cooperative responding. Following acquisition the other 15 pairs of Ss were placed on extinction in the following manner: reinforcement was withheld from one S for cooperative responding, while the second S continued to receive reinforcement for cooperative responding. Frequency of cooperative responses dropped significantly for pairs receiving punishment, while no significant change occurred for pairs placed on extinction.
