Abstract

The O-D stretching frequency of HDO in liquid water has been studied as a function of concentration for some well-known protein denaturants of the urea-guanidinium class. Data on the effects of various concentrations of denaturant on the stretching frequency are tabulated. The study indicates that the denaturing effectiveness of a particular compound is not generally related to changes induced in bulk water structure.
