Abstract

Background and objectives: The Proprotein convertase subtilisin / kexin type 9 (PCSK-9) regulates circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) particles via the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R). Obesity contributes to metabolic risk factors of cardiovascular disease, including elevated LDL-C levels. Bariatric surgery is considered the most effective treatment strategy against numerous obesity-related risk factors. The present study aimed to measure the effect of pronounced weight loss induced by bariatric surgery on PCSK-9 plasma concentrations over 12 months.
