Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effects of progressive relaxation therapy on pain and anxiety levels in lumbar disc herniation patients. Methods A total of 42 lumbar disc herniation patients in Orthopedics Department in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University from March 2016 to September 2016 were selected using objective sampling method and they were randomly divided into two groups: intervention and control group, 21 cases respectively. Patients in control group received normal nursing care, while patients in intervention group received additional progressive relaxation therapy. Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) were used to evaluate the pain and anxiety levels of patients. Results After 4 weeks of intervention, the NRS and SAS scores of patients in intervention group were (3.41±0.73) and (42.88±8.97) , both of which were statistically significant lower than those in control group (t=11.676, 6.776; P<0.05) . Conclusions Progressive relaxation therapy can effectively decrease the level of pain and improve anxiety of lumbar disc herniation patients. Key words: Pain; Anxiety; Relaxation therapy; Lumbar disc herniation
