Abstract
This investigation examines the relationships between processing conditions and the interlaminar strength of thermoplastic composite rings manufactured using laser-assisted on-line consolidation. The laser power and laser beam alignment were varied to determine an acceptable processing window. Relationships between interlaminar strength and these processing parameters were investigated using the Interlaminar-Shear-Device (ISD) experimental test method. Micrographs of the manufactured and failed specimens were taken to determine the quality of consolidation and the failure location, respectively. The void contents were reasonably high and failures generally occurred in the void regions resulting in lower interlaminar strengths compared with parts manufactured in an autoclave. In addition, the shear strength varied significantly for the different processing parameters used.
