Abstract

The effects of the probe position and electrical input power were investigated using a 20 kHz horn-type sonicator in vessels with various volumes. The probe was placed at the bottom (“B”), the midpoint (“M”), and the liquid surface (“T”) of cylindrical vessels. Sonochemical oxidation activity was quantified using KI (Potassium iodide) dosimetry. A considerable enhancement of sonochemical activity was elicited at position “B”, and higher input power levels induced higher activities at “B”. The large enhancement of the sonochemical activity can be mainly attributed to a larger and stronger circular active cavitation zone observed using the luminol method.
