Abstract

Human trabecular meshwork tissue was embedded in Lowicryl K4M and subjected to electron microscopy. Elastin in the trabecular meshwork was stained using protein A-gold immunostaining method and observed under an electron microscope. For the enzymatic digestion study, the tissue specimens were incubated in various concentrations of solutions of both porcine pancreatic elastase-1 (PPE) and {ie297-1} complex ({ie297-2}), before immunostaining. Many gold particles showing the presence of elastin were found within elastic fibers of the trabecular meshwork. The number of gold particles in the elastic fibers significantly decreased after the enzymatic digestion.
