Abstract

Abstract It is shown that deuteron impurities at natural concentrations in KH2PO4 can couple with temperature fluctuations, the main result being that this coupling produces a decay channel for the shear acoustic phonon causing a pro nounced temperature dependent linewidth. The ratio of the scattered intensity at zero frequency to the scattered intensity at the acoustic frequency shows no measurable effect caused by a dynamical central peak. These results indicate the features we have to look for in light scattering expe riments near the paraelectric to ferroelectric phase transition temperature.
