Abstract

Abstract The effects of sowing methods, sowing rates, and plant patterns on seed yield of safflower, oilseed rape, and lupin crops were investigated in trial plots. Conventional sowing methods, precision sowing in wide rows and precision sowing to an on-the-square pattern were compared. Safflower and lupin seed yields increased when precision sown to an approximately on-the-square pattern, but gave no further increase when sown accurately on-the-square. The roller drill method of sowing oilseed rape at high populations gave the best yield of this crop. A safflower radial trial gave an optimum plant population of 1.6 million plants per hectare.
