Abstract
An analytical and experimental investigation is conducted to identify the effects of delaminations on the performance of surface-mounted piezo-actuators on a cantilever beam. Two types of delaminations are considered: an edge delamination and an inner delamination. Results indicate that an edge delamination will reduce the structural coupling performance of the piezo-actuator whereas an inner delamination has little detrimental effect on the coupling performance. Furthermore, the edge delamination will cause significant variations in the dynamic characteristics of the composite beam whereas the effect of the inner delamination is substantially less.
