Abstract
A VARIABLE zinc requirement of the chick which depended upon the protein component of the purified diet has been reported by Moeller (1959). Chicks that were fed isolated soybean protein in the diet exhibited a greater need for zinc than chicks fed either casein or egg protein. Kratzer et al. (1959) have shown that poults fed non-autoclaved isolated soybean protein had a greater zinc requirement for optimum growth and prevention of perosis than poults fed autoclaved isolated soybean protein. Only approximately 55% of the magnesium contained in isolated soybean protein was found available by McWard and Scott (1961) when they studied the magnesium needs of the young chick. These reports suggest that isolated soybean protein either has protein-trace mineral complexes or contains factor(s) that make trace minerals unavailable to the poult and chick.Kratzer et al. (1959) indicated that the addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to an isolated soy protein…
