Abstract

The researcher surveyed the perception of University of Calabar and Cross River State University of Technology students participating in physical fitness programme on the effects of the programme in enhancing their optimum performance, excellence and wellness. The variables involved are their academic life health and self actualization one hundred and fifty subjects were randomly selected from five fitness centers through cluster sampling with no gender bias. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The data were analyzed using percentages, Chi-square (x2) and Pearson Product Correlation Movement (r) for the four set hypotheses at 0.05 significant level. Two hypotheses were rejected while the other two were accepted. The result indicated that many people were participating in physical fitness programme just to reduce their weight and some engage in it to satisfy their fundamental human needs of association. Recommendation made were based on results and finding with the aim of optimizing students performance excellence and wellness through physical fitness programme.
