Abstract

Platonin is one of the photosensitive dyes of trithiazole pentamethine cyanine. It is effective for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). In this study, platonin was found to significantly enhance interleukin 2 (IL-2) production of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) when PBMCs were not stimulated by any mitogens or antigens. In contrast, platonin significantly suppressed IL-2 production of PBMCs stimulated by phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or anti-CD3. Platonin did not affect the expression of IL-2 receptors on T cells. These results suggest that platonin enhances IL-2 production of unstimulated PBMCs and suppresses IL-2 production of PBMCs in the case of overproduction and that the immunoregulatory effects of platonin on IL-2 production of PBMCs may be one of the mechanisms of the effectiveness of platonin on RA and JRA.
