Abstract

A three-stage continuous culture model system was used to investigate the impacts of increasing concentrations of phenol on the component physiological groups of a hexanoate-catabolizing association, isolated from anoxic landfill. Low concentrations were found to reduce sulphate-reducing bacterial activity whilst concentration of 8 and 2 mmol/l effected reductions of 90•2 and 99•1% in methane release rate and hexanoate β-oxidation, respectively
