Abstract
This paper presents a study of a wideband FSK coherent optical system using injection-locked laser amplifiers (ILA) as repeaters.1 In particular, the effect of the phase noise introduced by the amplifiers is analyzed. The results allow the determination of amplifier spacing for a particular laser amplifier, the optimum amplifier characteristics, and the required amplifier stability. The system analyzed employs an FM transmitter and a wideband optical detector followed by a discriminator and low-pass filter. Between the transmitter and receiver there are M sections of fiber and M injection-locked amplifiers. Evaluation of the SNR at the output of the low-pass filter enables the system performance to be obtained as a function of the amplifier parameters.
