Abstract

TheeffectsofsmallamountsofP2O5�onthepartialmeltingofmodelspinellherzoliteinthesystemCaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2� +� P2O5 have been investigated at 1.1 GPa in piston-cylinder experiments, in order to constrain the influence of this minor componentonmantlemelting.�Aconcentrationof�1�wt%�P2O5�inthemeltdepressesthesolidusofspinellherzolitebyonly�2°C,� reducesSiO2�inmeltsby�1�wt%�andAl2O3�by�0.44�wt%,�butincreasesCaOby�0.3�wt%�andMgOby�0.14�wt%.�Apreliminary� investigationoftheeffectofTiO2�inthesystemCaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2�+�TiO2�showsthatitdecreasesthesolidusby�~1°C/wt%,� anditseffectonthemeltcompositionissmall,�beingmainlyoneofdilution.
