Abstract

Thirty-five suspended sediment samples from Kainji Lake were studied to determine the effect of dispersion on the natural particle size distribution in the natural water. Results obtained suggest that the rapid rate of decay of the submerged plants released a copious amount of humic acids which served as strong flocculants. It is concluded that the decay of organic materials has an important effect on the settling rate of suspended sediments, particularly in tropical lakes.
