Abstract

In a study in 24 patients with essential hypertension, blood pressure was measured non-invasively throughout the day, before and during therapy with the long-acting β-adrenoceptor blocking drug bopindolol. Mean blood pressure was reduced from 161/96 mmHg to 147/87 mmHg, using a mean dose of 1.6 mg bopindolol once a day. There were no significant differences in the standard deviations of circadian variations of blood pressure, but those of the heart rate were reduced. Bopindolol therefore exerted a favourable antihypertensive effect in doses of 1–2 mg once a day, while maintaining the circadian profile of blood pressure.
