Abstract

The present study was aimed to investigate the recovery effects of leave extract of Ocimum basilicum against AlCl3 induced toxicity. The trial was performed on adult male albino mice (Mus musculus). The experimental animals were randomly divided into three groups i.e. control, T1 and T2 with six animals in each group. Animals in control group received no treatment and were provided with normal saline. Both treatment groups T1 and T2 were orally administered with 80mg/kg body weight of AlCl3 for 16 days. After that animals in T1 and T2 groups were administered 100 mg/kg body weight and 200 mg/kg body weight respectively of Ocimum basilicum extract for 15 days. Several of the important hematological and serological parameters were measured. There was a significant increase in lymphocyte count and a significant decrease in neutrophil count in both T1 and T2 groups. There was a significant increase in red blood cells and platelet count while mean corpuscular haemoglobin was significantly decreased in T1 group. Alanine transaminase was significantly increased while serum creatinine was decreased in both T1 and T2 groups. It is concluded that Ocimum basilicum extract influenced several hematological and serological parameters in male albino adult mice after AlCl3 induced toxicity. It induces microcytic anemia, directly effects haematopoisis; causes oxidative stress in brain tissue [8]; and is a contributing factor in Alzheimer’s disease [9]
