Abstract

Before nutrient limitation set in, mycelium of Aspergillus nidulans contained little free nuclease activity but treatment of extracts with trypsin led to the appearance of substantial DNAase and RNAase activity as a result of activation of a cryptic nuclease. Onset of nitrogen or sulphur limitation led to the appearance of DNAase activity but not necessarily RNAase activity. Carbon or phosphate limitation did not lead to a similar increase in free DNAase activity.
