Abstract

The differential cross section for electro-excitation of nuclei and the polarization of the scattered beam are presented for an oriented target and/or polarized incident electrons. The electron states are represented by plane waves. Transitions of arbitrary multipolarity are considered, and both the Coulomb and the transverse parts of the interaction are taken into account. Experiments with aligned targets can be used to determine the reduced nuclear matrix elements contributing to a mixed (E L, M L±1) transition. The change in the electron polarization vector by inelastic scattering from an unoriented target is discussed in some detail for the cases of pure Coulomb and pure transverse scattering.
