Abstract

Abstract The field and imaging properties of two orthogonally polarized Gaussian optical beams through a nonlinear defocusing graded-index rod lens are studied for the first time to our knowledge. The beam width parameters, inverses of the radii of curvature of the wavefront, imaging distances, and linear magnifications respectively in terms of the power of beams, waist radii of incident beams, and rod dimensions are derived by using a variational approach. It is concluded that there are two regimes of propagation, divergence and collapse. A comparison of these results with linear cases shows that the power of beams and the nonlinear interaction of two beams have great effects on the field, propagation and imaging properties of two beams.
