Abstract

Abstract The effects of nitrogen contamination on limited streamer tubes (LSTs) operated with a 25:75 argon-isobutane mixture were studied at sea level. Plateaus of three LSTs were measured with up to 15% nitrogen contamination. The knee voltages are found to decrease at a rate of ⋍ 35 V/1% of nitrogen whereas the breakaway voltages are found to decrease at a 2–3 times higher rate, resulting in narrower plateaus, at lower voltages.
