Abstract

1. The steels of the 9Ni-4Co (VKS6) type after tempering within the 530°C–560°C range possess high stress-corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, low notch sensitivity and good impact toughness within an extensive temperature range. After low-temperature tempering these steels have no advantages in comparison with an economically alloyed 30KhGSN2A steel. 2. To restrict the VKS6 residual austenite content to 3–5%, and to make it responsive to isothermal quenching, the steels' Ni content should be limited to 7–8% and it must be subjected to chilling. At higher residual austenite contents both the tensile strength and the impact toughness deteriorate, especially at low temperatures, due to the residual austenite transformation into untempered martensite during deformation. 3. The VKS6 steel is practically immune to temper brittleness. It preserves its high service characteristics after prolonged heating at 550°C, and therefore can be used as a heat-resistant steel for parts working at temperatures up to 550°C.
