Abstract
1. 1. Thoracic ganglion extracts prepared from female Uca pugilator induced precocious ovarian maturation in intact and eyestalkless crabs. 2. 2. The ability of the thoracic ganglion extracts to induce accelerated ovarian growth varied with respect to the phase of the reproductive cycle. 3. 3. Thoracic ganglia, eyestalk neuroendocrine tissue and cyclic AMP inhibited protein synthesis in previtellogenic ovaries of Uca pugilator in vitro. 4. 4. Eyestalk removal, especially during the breeding season, produced accelerated ovarian growth, as expected. 5. 5. These results support the hypothesis that the ovary of decapod crustaceans is regulated by inhibiting and stimulating hormones.
