Abstract

This paper investigates the effects of natural ageing on the properties of a polyvinylidene fluoride PVDF-coated fabric, Ferrari 1302T, taken from the Qingdao Etsong Stadium. Contrast experiments between ageing and newly coated fabrics were carried out in terms of coating, uniaxial force at failure, tearing strength, Young’s modulus and bonding strength. Results show that the aged coating on the sunny side has several cracks, with bulges and pulverization, and the coating on the shaded side has some bulges, but there are no cracks and pulverization. Brightness decreases at different degrees on the sunny side and the shaded side. Force at failure and tearing strength also decrease. Degradation of tearing strength was found to be more obvious. Non-linear behaviour of coated fabrics under tensile tests can be described by using a piecewise linear relation and experiments show that both the uniaxial Young’s modulus and biaxial Young’s modulus of ageing Ferrari 1302T fabric decrease. Bonding strength of ageing fabrics decreases, but the failure mode indicates that the bonding still meets the required conditions.
