Abstract

Amorphous Ti66Nb13Cu8Ni6.8Al6.2 alloy powders with minor B4C or C additions were synthesized by mechanical alloying. Significant effects of B4C or C additions on the glass-forming ability, thermal stability, and particle size of ball-milled powders are found. Moreover, bulk alloys were fabricated by spark plasma sintering of the synthesized amorphous powders. Ceramic particles are observed in sintered bulk samples. Meanwhile, the additions of B4C or C influence dramatically the mechanical behavior of fabricated Ti66Nb13Cu8Ni6.8Al6.2 ultrafine-grained composites. All alloys consolidated by heating to 1,023 K at different heating rates and holding for 0 min exhibit high fracture strength of around 2,000 MPa but limited plasticity.
