Abstract

Objective To explore the effects of measurement of gastric residual volume on the prevention from aspiration pneumo- nia in ischemic stroke patients. Methods A total of 63 cases of ischemic stroke patients with dysphagia and indwelling gastric tube were se-lected as control group and 76 cases as observation group, who were admitted from March 2011 to August 2011 and from September 2011 to February 2012 respectively. Measurement of gastric residual volume in the basis of routine nursing care in the observation group was adopted. The aspiration pneumonia incidence rate, indwelling time of gastric tube and hospitalization time between the two groups were compared be-tween two groups. Results Compared with the control group, in the observation group the aspiration pneumonia incidence rate was lower (23.3% vs 39.7%, P =0. 039), indwelling time of gastric tube was shorter [ ( 10. 88 ±4. 77) d vs ( 13.05 ±6. 54) d, P =0. 0271, hospitalization time was shorter [ ( 16.38 ± 5.08 ) d vs ( 18.86 ± 4. 75 ) d, P = 0. 004]. Conclusions The measurement of gastric resid-ual volume can reduce the occurrence of aspiration pneumonia and shorten the indwelling time gastric tube and hospitalization time in ische-mic stoke patients with dysphagia. Key words: Gastric residual volume; Ischemic stroke; Aspiration pneumonia
