Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Marriage Checkups (MC) engaged with premarital couples, using a single-case research design. Methods: Five premarital couples were recruited for the study. Based on a multiple baseline design, each couple participated in MC at different time points. 1) Cognitive, 2) emotional, motivational, and 3) behavioral outcome indices were measured multiple times before and after the intervention. Results: The marriage checkup significantly improved 1) cognitive (understanding of relationship, understanding of how to improve relationship, and understanding of partner’s mind); 2) emotional, motivational (self-efficacy in relationship improvement, motivation for relationship improvement, and couple satisfaction), and 3) behavioral outcomes (preparation for marriage in relational aspects). Couples reported high levels of satisfaction with MC. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that MC is an effective intervention for premarital couples. MC is expected to contribute to expansion of public services helping premarital couples.
