Abstract

First-order magnetic phase transitions related to a field-induced change of the ground state (magnetic instability) in itinerant electron systems are considered. Some effects giving rise to the metamagnetic properties of the d-subsystem in f-d intermetallic systems with a magnetic 4f-sublattice are discussed. A theory of the magnetization process and field-induced phase transitions in ferrimagnets with one unstable (metamagnetic) sublattice is evolved and experimental material displaying the main features of these ferrimagnets is presented.
