Abstract

Low temperature exposure (5 and 10°C) during seed development on the mother plant increased bolting of chicory and lettuce in comparison to high temperature (15°C) exposure. Seed development in low temperature enhanced bolting of chicory even at high germination temperatures, and suggests that the crop vernalization requirement was already satisfied on the mother plant before seed harvesting. Bolting of spinach was not influenced by temperatures during seed development. Low temperatures during seed production decreased the emergence percentages of lettuce and spinach.
