Abstract

Photosynthesis and production of halophytes are affected by changes in salinity that occur over different time scales (1). Seasonal and diurnal variations in rainfall, rates of evapotranspiration and tidal cycles influence the salinity of marshes. In this paper, the effects of changes in salinity over different time scales on photosynthesis and growth of the halophyte Plantago maritima L. have been examined. The gas exchange responses of leaves have been measured at different salinities. The results have been analyzed with reference to a model of the biochemical rate limitations of photosynthesis which is based on the gas exchange of single leaves (2).
