Abstract

The effects of lateral edges in armor materials on the ballistic performance against a long rod projectile were investigated in this study. RHA and silicon carbide ceramic were used in this study. Ballistic tests using a tungsten heavy alloy long rod projectile with a length to diameter ratio of 10.7 were performed to determine the ballistic efficiencies of such specimens. The ballistic efficiencies were also simulated using AUTODYN S/W with the SPH method for a comparison with the experimental results. The experimental results showed that the ballistic efficiency increased with an increase in the distance from the lateral edge of the specimen until the edge distance increased to 6.7 and 2.7 times the diameter of the projectile for the RHA and SiC ceramic specimens, respectively.
