Abstract

Laminarin sulphate, an antilipaemic heparinoid without anticoagulant effect, has been shown to be relatively free from side-effects in a long-term study on rabbits. It was shown to inhibit coronary and aortic atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed rabbits. The effect of laminarin sulphate on hypercholesterolaemia was less marked, due to wide variability in response to cholesterol feeding. The most significant effect of laminarin sulphate on serum lipids was on the β/α-lipoprotein ratios which, in turn, were usually related to the degree of experimental atherosclerosis. The severity of atherosclerosic lesions was correlated with the degree of hypercholesterolaemia.
