Abstract

Iodine is one of the essential elements in human body, involving in the synthesis of thyroxine. Monitoring of iodine nutrition in the population is of great concern worldwide. During the special period of pregnancy, improper iodine intake may cause thyroid dysfunction of the mothers and their infants, even lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes and permanent neurological damage of infants. The accurate test methods, standardized diagnostic criteria, closely monitoring iodine nutrition and reasonable intervention are vital to prevent improper iodine intake in pregnat women. This article reviews the effects of iodine status on the maternal and infant health and the measures to prevent improper iodine intake during pregrancy.
