Abstract

A one-dimensional tokamak plasma transport code was adapted to include impurity influx, stripping, radiation, and diffusion, as well as the usual processes of hydrogen plasma and heat transport, recycling at the boundary, and multi-generation charge-exchange. Neutral-beam heating, adiabatic compression, and divertor boundary conditions are included as optional features. Illustrative computations are given for present-day and next-generation tokamaks. The problems of impurity control are discussed, and two technical approaches are examined in greater detail: the transient cold-plasma shield, and the poloidal divertor. (auth)
