Abstract

Male rats (Long-Evans) were rendered unilaterally cryptorchid on day 21 of life by abdominal fixation of the left testis. Three weeks later, when tubular degeneration was complete, these animals were hypophysectomized and sacrificed serially during the ensuing post-hypophysectomy interval. Normal animals were also hypophysectomized at this time and autopsied in a corresponding manner. Following hypophysectomy, abdominal testis weight of unilateral cryptorchid rats declined rapidly and at a rate not unlike that of the ventral prostate; however, weight loss of the contralateral, scrotal testis and of the testes of hypophysectomized control animals was gradual in the immediate post-hypophysectomy interval. These data, corroborated by histologic evidence but not analyzed histometrically, indicate that testicular regression following hypophysectomy begins probably with a rapid decline in weight and functional activity of interstitial cells and that the tubular weight response is delayed for several days.
