Abstract

The addition of ca. 5 mmol/100 g of Al to a paddy subsoil sample increased its permeability by 3 to 4 times in the order of Al(OH)0.53+ 2.47, Al(OH)0.79+ 2.21 5 resulted in an increase of permeability by 4 to 10 times and 4 times for the samples both treated and not treated with hydroxy-Al, respectively. This enhancement of permeability was greater and more lasting for Al(OH)2.56+ 0.44 than for Al(OH)0.53+ 2.47. The increase of permeability by the addition of hydroxy-Al was greater for the paddy subsoil sample than for the upland subsoil sample, but the effect of air-drying was more marked and lasting for the upland subsoil sample.
