Abstract

Many case reports of neurosyphilis with atypical features in patients co-infected with immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) have suggested that the clinical manifestations and the course of neurosyphilis are altered in HIV-infected individuals.1-4 However, case reports may be biased so as to emphasize unusual findings, and cases of neurosyphilis with atypical features were common even before the penicillin era.5 Few studies compared series of cases of neurosyphilis in HIV-infected and in HIV-uninfected patients.6,7 Patients and methods.
