Abstract

Effects of hot forming cold die quenching (HFQ) and room temperature equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) on the formability and required pressing load of AA2024 aluminum alloy are studied. Samples underwent different solution treatments and ECAPed in consecutive passes in HFQ and water quenched (WQ) modes. Routine solution treatment was applied to exclusively investigate the effects of dissolution of alloying elements without evolution of grain structure. Another solution treatment leading to full recrystallization of the samples, was utilized followed by interpass solutionizing to study the joint influences of dissolution and recrystallization of grain structure in one and successive ECAP passes. According to the results, utilizing the second class of solution treatment lead to higher formability and lower pressing load. In addition, after both solution treatments, HFQ samples need lower pressing load compared to WQ samples while result in higher formability and similar mechanical properties.
