Abstract

This paper presents a study on effects of helix angle, face width and number of teeth on root stresses of helical internal and external gear pairs in mesh. The root stresses of helical internal and external gear pairs with various helix angles, face widths and numbers of teeth were calculated using the influence functions of tooth deflection and contact approach and the bending moment factor. The effects of the helix angle, the face width and the number of teeth on the load sharing factor, the load distribution on the contact line and the root stress of the internal and external gear pair were determined. The worst meshing position (meshing position where the maximum root stress occurs) of the gear pair was also examined.
