Abstract

Objective To determine the effects of growth hormone (GH) enriched parenteral nutrition(PN) on nutrition status and immune function in elderly patients after esophageal cancer surgery. Methods Seventy-two esophageal cancer patients who underwent the same elective operation were randomized into 2 groups. Both groups were treated with equal calorie and equal nitrogen by central vein during the immediate 10 days after operation. GH enriched PN group was given GH from the 3rd day after operation, and daily dose was 8 U for seven days. The status of immunological parameters and nutrition parameters were observed and analyzed. Results Before the operation, the levels of ALB, TF, IgA, IgG, IgM, CD3+, CD4+, CD4+/CD8+ of the two groups were less than those of the lower limit of normal value. On the sixth day after operation, all indicators of GH group were better than those of the routine group except of CD8+ . On the tenth day, the status of ALB, TF, IgA, IgG, CD4+/CD8+ of GH group was better than those of the routine group ( P<0.05). Conclusion Compared with routine PN, the immune response and nutrition status of elderly patients after esophageal cancer surgery can be ameliorated by GH enhanced PN. Key words: Growth hormone; Parenteral nutrition; Esophageal cancer
