Abstract

ABSTRACT Green coffee and green tea inhibited mammary tumors formation in rats treated with 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA). The number of rumors in a population of rats on a base diet containing 20 percent of either green coffee or green tea for 2 weeks before being given a single dose of DMBA was less than 60 percent of the number observed in rats not receiving green coffee or green tea. Green tea also reduced the number of rumors in a rumor bearing rat. The mean latency period of mammary rumor appearance was prolonged in coffee- and tea-treated groups. No significant decrease in body weight was observed between the control and treated animals. The results suggest that prolonged consumption of green coffee and green tea may significantly inhibit the development of chemically induced mammary tumors.
