Abstract

For a number of years, it has been demonstrated that some sugars increase the calcium absorption by intestinal segments isolated from different species of animals (1,2). In order to evaluate the mechanism of these phenomena, we studied the intestinal absorptive and renal tubular reabsorptive capacities for calcium when a large amount of glucose is transported from the luminal to the serosal pole of these 2 epithelia. High glucose flow across intestinal and renal tubular cells were obtained by giving an oral glucose load to patients with an overt diabetes mellitus.
