Abstract

Gamma ray irradiation effects on the piezoelectric, ferroelectric and dielectric properties of bismuth doped barium titanate ceramics have been investigated. Bismuth doped barium titanate ceramics are irradiated at room temperature by Co60 ion beam of energy 200 Gy. A double hysteresis loop has been observed after irradiation, which may be due to the random local strains caused by irradiation. After irradiation, piezoelectric charge constant and bipolar strain decrease because of fractured grains as confirmed from scanning electron micrographs. Phase transition temperature shifts to a lower value with increase in degree of diffuseness after irradiation. The piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties have been deteriorated by gamma ray irradiation.
