I. Mass and luminosity functions and background light. Miller, G. E. Abstract It is pointed out that galaxies in groups and clusters are subjected to a variety of interactions. Thus, direct collisions may result in the merging of two galaxies, and the remnants of such mergers may be elliptical galaxies. Grazing encounters may occur, and galaxies may interact with interacluster gas. It is not yet clear which interactions are important in determining the properties of galaxies and clusters. The present investigation is concerned with the role of one interaction, galaxy collisions, in determining the luminosity and mass functions of galaxies and in creating a diffuse background light. Mergers and the formation of elliptical galaxies are also studied. Direct computer (or N-body) simulations are used to study the role of collisions in rich clusters. It is found that most results depend strongly on the tidal collision cross section. A basic uncertainty encountered is due to a lack of knowledge concerning the internal orbits of matter in galaxies.
