Abstract

Coated engines are now known to cause improvements in performance and emissions. But an excessive increase in nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions is described as a negative aspect of coated engines. For this purpose, many coating materials are applied to Pistons and valves. One of these coating materials is Al2O3 + 13%TiO2 ceramic powders. In this study, Al2O3 + 13%TiO2 ceramic powders were coated on piston and Valve surfaces by plasma spray method. Fusel oil containing 9.6% water by volume was mixed with 25% of diesel fuel in the coated engine and tested at different engine speeds (1400 rpm, 1700 rpm, 2000 rpm, 2300 rpm, 2600 rpm, 2900 rpm, and 3200 rpm). In all fuel mixtures, engine in-cylinder pressure changes, heat release rate (HRR), fuel consumption value, exhaust gas temperature value and emission values (NOx, smoke opacity and carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC)) were examined. Along with the addition of fusel oil to diesel fuel, the pressure in the cylinder and exhaust gas temperature in the uncoated engine decreased, while the pressure in the cylinder increased in the coated engine. In addition, fuel consumption in the coated engine, NOx, CO, smoke opacity and HC emissions tended to decrease. The use of coating with the addition of fusel oil has been found to be more effective in reducing NOx, CO, smoke opacity and HC emissions.
