Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective To analyse the effects of 12 weeks of free dance compared to the control group and the reference group without breast cancer, on the mood state, perspective of aging, and optimism of women submitted to breast cancer surgery. Methods This randomised clinical trial enrolled breast cancer women (a) free dance (IG n = 11) and (b) control group (CG n = 11); randomly, and compared the outcomes with (c) healthy group without breast cancer (RGWBC n = 12). The evaluated outcomes were mood state, aging perspective, and optimism. Results There was an intragroup improvement for IG in the mood state variables, in the mental confusion (p = 0.012) and tension (p = 0.005) domains and in the aging perspective variable in the loneliness domain (p = 0.031). In the RGWBC intragroup, there was an improvement in the perspective of aging in the loneliness domain (p = 0.021) and worsening in the happiness (p = 0.001) and integrity domains (p ≤ 0.001). There was a worsening in the tension domain (p = 0.004) of the mood state, in the RGWBC intergroup when compared to the IG. Conclusion Free dancing was positive in the mood (in mental confusion and tension) and in the perspective of aging (loneliness) of women undergoing breast cancer surgery.
